SmartBuild, your questions answered
Depth and trench, fake-evidence controls, offline capture, hardware, who it is for, and how SmartBuild fits with NetworkAccess. The questions construction and compliance teams ask most, answered from how SmartBuild is built.
Get a demo →What is SmartBuild?
SmartBuild is a construction quality and compliance platform: a field app plus a web system that captures geo-tagged, CORS-corrected evidence of every construction step at the moment the work happens. Depth, trench, ducts, manholes and site safety are recorded as the crew builds, so the record is the work, not a reconstruction made later.
Is SmartBuild only about depth?
No. Depth validation for trenchless boring and open trench was where it started. SmartBuild now covers full construction compliance: site safety, crew PPE, trench dimensioning, duct laying, HDD bore alignment, manhole quality, and backfill and restoration. Depth remains a core capture target; it is one part of an end-to-end as-built record.
How does SmartBuild stop fake or reused evidence?
Several controls work together. Fields auto-fill from images rather than manual entry, every capture carries a geotag and location check, duplicate-photo detection flags reused images, computer vision validates what the photo shows, and workflow-locked sequencing means the next step opens only after the prior step is validated. Rejected-photo history is retained, so the audit trail stays intact. The aim is faster, cleaner closure for honest crews; only fabrication gets harder.
We already photograph everything. Why is that not enough?
Untagged photos can be reused across stretches, and that reuse is the gap nobody captures yet. SmartBuild makes evidence trustworthy rather than just voluminous: captures are geotagged, CV-validated, duplicate-checked and locked to the construction sequence, so a record proves a specific step at a specific place and time.
Does SmartBuild work offline?
Yes, fully. Maps, layers and workflows are downloaded ahead of time, capture happens locally on the device, and data syncs when a connection is available. It is built for exactly the field geographies where coverage is patchy, with the goal of zero data loss.
What hardware do we need?
SmartBuild is device-agnostic. It decodes the standard NMEA output from the GNSS chip and applies CORS corrections, with post-processed kinematic for higher precision, and there is no proprietary SDK to lock you in. Field users do not manage credentials; the app connects to corrections in the background. For the highest-grade capture, the SmartMeasure GNSS receiver is available as a higher-grade option.
How accurate is the position and depth capture?
The platform targets sub-5cm captured-point accuracy when CORS-corrected, using NMEA decode and post-processed kinematic, with depth captured every 9m as a configurable target. These are technical performance targets for the platform, not customer results, since SmartBuild is mid-build and deployment metrics are still being gathered.
Who is SmartBuild for?
Fiber rollout owners and their contractor chains, from field crew and site engineer up through contractor, project manager and client. It is built with government programs such as BharatNet and CONSTL in mind, and it is designed to extend across sectors, to power, civil and other linear infrastructure construction.
How does the computer vision validation work today?
Six computer-vision use cases are proven: trench condition, duct identification, manhole quality, last-mile cable clips, manhole-cover and restoration condition, and pole equipment identification. Further use cases, including cabinets, trench restoration, crew PPE and site barricading, are on the pipeline and are in progress rather than shipped.
What does poor construction evidence actually cost?
When records are weak, the downstream costs show up as invoice rejection, audit penalties, network degradation, safety incidents, and multi-pit excavation when a fault has to be found again later. Precise records support single-dig fault location, so you are not digging several pits to find your own asset. SmartBuild is designed to prevent that class of problem by making the evidence trustworthy at source.
How does SmartBuild compare to existing GIS or as-built tools?
Existing tools each cover a slice, whether splice computer vision, fiber GIS on mobile, or centimetre GPS as-built. What is not covered yet is enforcing centimetre position and depth capture inside the construction workflow, offline, across trench, duct, manhole and pole together. That end-to-end, workflow-locked capture is where SmartBuild is positioned.
How does SmartBuild relate to NetworkAccess?
SmartBuild is the build-phase evidence layer. The captures it produces are intended to feed the SmartInventory digital twin in NetworkAccess, with that integration on the v1 roadmap. SmartBuild is offered bundled with NetworkAccess today, and a standalone cross-sector construction-compliance story is emerging.
