The cost metric

RTO is an address-quality problem

Return to origin is the failed-delivery return, and in India it is mostly an addressing problem wearing a logistics cost. The address that came in at checkout was vague, the geocode landed on the wrong block, the rider could not find the door, and the parcel comes back. Every return is a wasted trip, a refund risk and a customer who may not order again.

Geocoding alone has a ceiling. The deck benchmark from an anonymized delivery operator puts address accuracy at around 85% with geocoding by itself. The remaining gap is where the returns live, and it is exactly the gap the India-specific capabilities were built to close.

Validate at entry, not at the doorstep

The expensive place to discover a bad address is the doorstep, after a rider has already ridden out. Address Validation moves that check to the checkout field, so the order never enters dispatch with an address that cannot be served.

Address Descriptors then add the layer Indian users think in: a landmark relative to the pin. A descriptor like “Near Hanuman Mandir, Block D” turns an ambiguous string into a place a rider can find on the first attempt.

The pin resolves to house-level accuracy, a landmark descriptor confirms it, and the address is validated before it ever reaches a rider. The same record sales took at checkout is the one the last mile delivers against.

From an 85% ceiling to 95%+

The deck benchmark from an anonymized delivery operator is the clearest read on the size of the gap: address accuracy sits at roughly 85% with geocoding alone, and reaches 95%+ once Address Validation and Address Descriptors are layered in. That same migration redeployed around eight engineers off geo work and took total geo spend down by about a third.
